PLATTE CITY – Facing an early season losing skid, the Platte County girls’ soccer team (2-4) turned four straight defeats into two consecutive triumphs with 15 goals scored.
After losing all three games in its home tournament to kick off the spring 0-3, Platte County gave up two late goals to lose 3-1 to Smithville (1-1-1) on March 27. The Lady Pirates struck first with an early second half score by freshman Amela Dzilic – her second of the year at the time.
Dzilic scored it on a header off a pass from Lily Kytasaari in the 13th minute and Platte County only had three other shots on goal in the contest. That was the first time the Lady Pirates weren’t playing from behind, giving them their first lead of the spring.
Going down the stretch, Smithville scored two goals in a 12-minute span after tying the game in the 50th minute. The Lady Warriors knocked down a 35-yard go-ahead score 18 minutes later and put it away with a 77th minute goal.
Looking to avoid starting off 0-5 for the second straight season, Platte County surpassed its season total in goals in one game alone. The Lady Pirates took down Raytown (0-5) 7-0 – marking the fifth straight shutout in the series – on April 2.
There were a lot of mouths to feed in the high-scoring outing by Platte County, starting with a score by Rylee Burris and Kytasaari. Burris scored another goal after Carissa Bacon and Madison Palmer also got on the board to make the score 5-0 before the Lady Pirates added two more.
Platte County built off that when William Chrisman (2-7) came to town on April 4. The Lady Pirates came out on top 8-1 and moved to 2-0 in the Kansas City Suburban Conference White Division.
