A long-time retail fixture in the Platte Woods area will soon close in the wake of the bankruptcy of Sears Holdings Corporation announced Monday, Oct. 15.
Liquidation sales are expected to begin soon at the Kmart at 7100 Prairie View Road.
Sears, Roebuck and Company was founded in 1892 and was considered an early pioneer in retail, becoming the largest retailer in the world until it was surpassed in 1989 by Walmart. In 2004, Sears was bought by the owner of Kmart, a big-box retailer founded in 1899. The merger created Sears Holdings, which has struggled in the new retail environment.
Northland Kmart locations have dwindled over the last five years, with the Prairie View Road location the last standing until this week.
The Sears location at the former Antioch Mall closed last year after more than 60 years in business.
