In the first wrestling match in the new Pirate Fieldhouse, Platte County swept Blue Springs on Jan. 5.
The Lady Pirates came out with a one-sided 54-9 victory after jumping out to an 18-3 lead. Hannah Mand and EmmaLyn Burnett had wins by fall early while Giada Cucchiara took a forfeit. There were a lot of weight classes that were left open with the opening four matches that actually happened being split as Haley Burge finished it off with a quick fall at 1:15.
On the boys’ side, Platte County scored the first nine points on a forfeit and a 10-4 decision by Caden Hulett in the 113-weight class. Alexander Escaping-Fillmer fell in 4:55 to give Blue Springs its first points of the match, closing the gap to 9-6.
The next three Pirates were victorious, starting with Grant Fadler pinning his opponent in 3:20 in the 126-weight class. Jackson Woolsey (132) pulled out a 4-3 decision before Grant Fadler (126) won by a 4-1 decision. Isaiah Seymour was pinned in 1:12 in the 144-weight class and David Olson lost on a 5-2 decision in the 150-weight class.
Platte County’s lead was cut down to 21-15 after that, but Darrell Smith pushed the lead up to 27-15 after a 22-10 major decision in the 157-weight class. Bryan Jennings (165) was pinned in 1:13 before Cole Johnson (175) won on a 7-2 decision and Quinn Lightle (190) won by fall in 1:47.
Jake Fernandez continued his strong start to the season with a 10-2 major decision triumph in the 215-weight class. Blue Springs came out on top in the 285-weight class when Mar’quese Brown fell in 4:38.
Fernandez has had an impressive winter thus far, coming out in fourth place in the Kansas City Stampede – one of the more competitive tournaments in the area that occurred on Dec. 17 – when he won seven of his nine matches. The match with Blue Springs was Platte County’s first one of the New Year as it will be back at it with a dual at Belton on Jan. 12.
