A convicted felon who led the Missouri Highway Patrol and other local police on a chase around the Barry Road area near Park Hill High School was released on bond last week.
Jerald Hendrix, 33, of Kansas City, was released Dec. 8 after his bond was reduced from $25,000 cash-only to allow a percentage posting, over the objections of the prosecutor’s office. Hendrix is prohibited from driving and is scheduled back in court before judge Quint Shafer on Jan. 26, 2021.
Hendrix is charged with resisting arrest while creating a substantial risk of serious injury or death.
According to a report from the Missouri Highway Patrol, on Tuesday, Dec. 1 a trooper spotted a Nissan with Washington license plates speeding in the school zone at Park Hill High School. The vehicle was traveling down Congress Avenue at nearly 40 miles per hour in a 25 mph zone. When the trooper attempted to stop the vehicle it made an illegal U-turn and fled. At the time, the trooper did not pursue the vehicle into the school zone at the risk of causing an accident. At a distance, the trooper watched the Nissan, driven by Hendrix, speed through the school zone and pass another vehicle in the wrong lane.
The trooper caught up with Hendrix as the vehicle entered the on-ramp to southbound Interstate 29 from Barry Road. Hendrix again exited at Northwest 72nd Street, went under the highway to attempt to get back onto northbound I-29. Instead, he turned the wrong way back onto 72nd Street and ended up on Roanridge Road. The chase was again dropped due to high speeds in the residential area off Roanridge.
On Wednesday, Dec. 2, the trooper caught up with Hendrix at a Barry Road QuikTrip. Hendrix claimed he was not the driver of the vehicle, but the trooper had already identified him when he conducted the U-turn in front of his patrol vehicle.
Hendrix is currently on parole for robbery and felony drug distribution. He also has numerous prior convictions, including, according to the report, first degree murder.
