Suburban boys basketball roundup: Park Hill South upsets Staley

Park Hill South prevailed in a battle of state-ranked teams, winning 51-42 against Staley on Friday, Feb. 14.

Staley, ranked No. 7 in Class 5, lead at halftime, 16-15 against the Class 5 No. 9-ranked Panthers.

Park Hill South got five points from Dylan Brougham in the third quarter and took a 30-29 lead into the final quarter.

Then, the Panthers’ offense broke out for 21 points in the fourth quarter. Senior guard Josh Prososki hit a 3-pointer and then hit all eight free throw attempts. He finished with a game-high 16 points.

Brougham also finished in double figures with 11.

Ray-Pec 70, Park Hill 44

The Tigers swept the season series against the Trojans with a victory on Friday, Feb. 14 in Peculiar, Mo.

The Class 5 No. 5-ranked Tigers scored 45 of its 70 points in two quarters — the first and third. That fast start helped Ray-Pec take a 41-15 lead at halftime.

Matthew Harrison hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter for Ray-Pec and added another in the third to finish with 15 points.

Jordan Jermain scored a game-high 21 points for Ray-Pec, hitting five 3-pointers as well.

Christian Bradford was the only player in double figures for Park Hill, scoring 15.

St. Joseph Central 66, Platte County 59

Joey Schultz scored a season-high 28 points but it wasn’t enough in a loss on Friday, Feb. 14 at the CHS Coliseum in St. Joseph.

Central led 32-23 at halftime and held a 10-point lead going into the final quarter. The Pirates outscored the Indians by two points in the fourth.

Schultz was the only one in double figures for the Pirates. Jarett Mueller and Jaden Burnett each had six. 

Liberty 63, Park Hill South 46

In another top-10 matchup, the Bluejays picked up a Suburban Conference Red Division victory on Tuesday, Feb. 11 in Liberty.

Park Hill South led 13-9 after the opening quarter but trailed 26-23 at halftime. Liberty’s Grant Stubbs scored 12 of his game-high 20 in the first half.

Josh Prososki and Dylan Brougham scored 13 points each for Park Hill South.

Park Hill 67, Lee’s Summit North 57

The Trojans snapped a three-game losing streak with a Suburban Conference Gold Division game on Tuesday, Feb. 11 in a home game.

Park Hill built an early lead and then held on in the fourth quarter as the Broncos trimmed a 20-point deficit down to 10.

The Trojans built an early lead thanks to score 23 points in the first and then 21 more in the second quarter. Christian Bradford had 15 of the points for the Trojans, while Andy Ashley had 10 as the duo matched the entire Lee’s Summit North’s offense.

Bradford finished with a game-high 19 points. Nyk Bryant tallied 14, while Ashley and Anthony Hall had 13 each.

Platte County 57, Smithville 51

The Pirates rallied in the fourth quarter to pick up a victory over rival Smithville on Tuesday, Feb. 11 in a Suburban Conference Blue Division game.

Platte County led only twice at the end of a quarter — after the first quarter and at the end of the game. 

The Warriors led 49-42 going into the fourth but was held to only two points and Platte County rallied to sweep the season series.

Since Smithville joined the Suburban Conference, Platte County is 4-0 against its Highway 92 rival and 12-4 overall dating back to 2008 when both were in the Midland Empire Conference.

Joey Schultz had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds for Platte County. Jaden Burnett added 14.

Park Hill South: The Panthers closes the Suburban Red Division schedule with a trio of league games. First was a home game against St. Joseph Central on Tuesday, Feb. 18, but the results of that game wasn’t available by press time. Then, the Panthers face two teams they lost to earlier this season playing at Truman on Thursday, Feb. 21 and hosting Liberty North on Wednesday, Feb. 25.

Park Hill: The Trojans played a Suburban Gold game on Tuesday, Feb. 18 against Blue Springs but the contest wasn’t over by press time. Then, the Trojans will play at Blue Springs South on Friday, Feb. 21, before returning home to play Lee’s Summit West on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

Platte County: The Pirates played host to Winnetonka on Tuesday, Feb. 18, but the results were not available by press time. The Pirates then plays at Class 4 No. 5-ranked Grandview on Friday, Feb. 21 and hosts Grain Valley on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
