Platte County lost a marathon game against Kearney, 78-75, in triple overtime in a Suburban Conference Blue Division game on Friday, Jan. 24 in Kearney.
The teams were tied at 49 after regulation, but not without some dramatics at the end. The Pirates used a trap defense at midcourt and Jaden Burnett got a steal that led to Dylan Minshall scoring the game-tying layup.
Kearney had three shots to win it but missed them all.
In the first overtime, Minshall again came up with a big basket, getting a rebound off one of his missed shots and got the basket. The Pirates (7-7) had to play defense again but Kearney (7-8) missed a potential game-winning shot and the game tied at 57-57.
Each team scored nine points and the difference to send it into triple overtime was a 3-pointer by Platte County’s Alex McClure. The defense, like they had the previous two chances, held and Kearney missed a potential game-winning shot.
Kearney built a five-point lead in triple overtime to help pull away for the victory.
Brennan Watkins scored 31 for Kearney, while Ashton Holloway had 17. Jacob Stevens recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Minshall and Joey Schultz scored 15 each for Platte County, while Alex McClure tallied 14 and Jace Trimble had 13. Trimble and McClure each made three 3-pointers.
McClure chipped in with four assists and four rebounds, two off Schultz’s team-high mark of six.
This was the first triple overtime game for Platte County since a 2009 game against Ruskin. The longest game in recent years was a four overtime game against Belton in 2015.
Park Hill South 59, Truman 45
Park Hill South avenged an earlier loss by beating Truman in the third-place game of the North Kansas City Tournament on Friday, Jan. 24.
The Patriots won 68-59 on Jan. 13 in Riverside, but the Panthers got one back before the two meet next month in another conference match.
Park Hill South led 15-14 after the first quarter before bumping the lead to 28-25 at halftime as Jake Powers scored six of his seven points.
Truman (10-5) was held to only six points in the third and Park Hill South built a double-digit lead.
In the fourth, Park Hill South hit nine of 14 free throws to seal the victory.
Josh Prososki and Dylan Brougham each had 10 points to lead the scoring for Park Hill South.
Powers and Brougham were named to the all-tournament team.
Rockhurst 75, Park Hill 66
The Hawklets scored 27 points in the first quarter and built a double-digit lead it maintained for most of the contest on Friday, Jan. 24.
Rockhurst hit five 3-pointers in the first, three by Ben Walsh, which built a 27-16 lead. Park Hill (4-11) scored 18 points in the second, five by Nyk Bryant, but trailed 47-34 at the break.
The Trojans limited Rockhurst to three baskets and nine points in the third quarter to cut into the deficit and trailed by nine going into the fourth.
Chrisitian Bradford got hot in the final quarter for the Trojans, scoring eight of his 12 points, but the rally came up short as Rockhurst hit 10 free throws in the quarter.
Bradford was one of four Trojans to score in double figures. Bryant led the way with 17, followed by Drew Townsend scoring 13. Bradford had 12 and Andy Ashley finished with 11.
Townsend was named to the all-tournament team, giving the leadership award.
Cashius Howell scored 20 for Rockhurst to lead all scorers.
Liberty 58, Park Hill 49
The Blue Jays used a strong third quarter to pull away from a close game against the Trojans on Thursday, Jan. 23 in the CW Stessman Invitational.
Liberty led 23-20 at halftime but outscored Park Hill, 20-12, in the third to push the lead to 12 going into the final quarter.
Nyk Bryant scored seven of his team-high 15 in the fourth for Park Hill.
Townsend scored 12 and Anthony Hall added 10 points for the Trojans.
Ray-Pec 47, Park Hill South 36
The Panthers of Ray-Pec won the semifinal matchup on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at the North Kansas City Tournament.
Ray-Pec outscored Park Hill South in the second half, including a 13-6 advantage in the fourth quarter to rally for a victory to reach the finals.
Park Hill South held the lead after three quarters but made only three baskets in the final 8 minutes. Jordan Jermain scored six of his 13 points in the fourth for Ray-Pec (13-2).
Liam Scroggins led Ray-Pec in scoring with 14 points.
Jake Powers finished with a game-high 15 points for Park Hill South, but was the only Panther in double figures.
Platte County 68, Smithville 52
The Pirates had their first winning streak of the year, making it three in a row after beating the Warriors on Monday, Jan. 20.
Platte County took a 10-point lead in the first quarter and didn’t look back. In the first and fourth quarter, the defense limited Smithville to less than 10 points.
Jaden Burnett scored a team-high 14 for the Pirates, while Dylan Minshall had 10 points and five rebounds.

Park Hill: The Trojans will play four games in a seven-day span, starting with a road game on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at Blue Springs. The results were not available by press time. On Thursday, Jan. 30, the Trojans have a road game against Lee’s Summit North. A showdown with Lincoln College Prep comes on Saturday, Feb. 1 at Notre Dame de Sion high School at 2:30 p.m. Then, on Tuesday, Feb. 4, the Trojans hosts Blue Springs South.
Park Hill South: The Panthers have a pair of doubleheaders this upcoming week, first at St. Joseph Central on Tuesday, Jan. 28 and then at Liberty North on Friday, Jan. 31. On Tuesday, Jan. 4, the Panthers travel to Lee’s Summit.
Platte County: The Pirates will play three games in the Grain Valley Sonic Showdown, starting with a game against Oak Grove on Tuesday, Jan. 28. Results were not available by press time. The Pirates will play again on Thursday against either Marshall/Grain Valley and the tournament wraps up on Saturday with the place games. Then, Platte County plays on the road on Tuesday, Feb. 4 against Class 4 No. 2-ranked Raytown South.
