Suburban Conference volleyball roundup: Bluejays take 1st at Sherwood tourney

West Platte went a perfect 5-0 at the Sherwood Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 6 at Sherwood High School in Creighton, Mo.

The Bluejays, now 22-5-2, opened with a 25-14 and 25-17 win against Knob Noster. Stat leaders in that game were Daire Stelljes with 12 aces and seven kills, while Lara Lieske had 10 aces and seven kills. Faith Stevens had 13 assists. Lexie Smither and Stevens led the team with five digs each.

The West Platte volleyball team took first place at the Sherwood Invitational held on Saturday, Oct. 6 in Creighton, Mo.

Up next was a 25-9, 25-11 win against Lakeland. Tori Norman had nine kills and four aces, while Lieske had seven kills and three digs.

The final pool play saw the Bluejays win in two against Appleton City. Stelljes had seven kills and two aces, as did Lieske. Zoe Buckler had seven assists and Faith Sevens had six digs.

In the semifinals, West Platte dispatched Holden 25-15 and 25-18.

Lieske had five aces, seven kills and four digs. Faith Stevens had 10 assists and three digs, as did Grace Stevens and Smither.

In the championship game, West Platte knocked off the defending Class 1 champions, Northland Christian, 25-10 and 25-12.

Lieske had 12 kills, while Stelljes and Smither had 10 each. Faith Stevens had 13 assists, while adding two digs and two aces. Smither and Stelljess also had two aces, while Smither had two digs.

Riverside Tournament

North Platte ventured to Elwood, Kan., on Saturday, Oct. 6 to take part in the Riverside Tournament and posted a 1-2 mark and didn’t advance to bracket play.

The Panthers won 25-17, 26-24 against Troy, Kan., in its first game.

Panthers freshman Emily Westwood had two blocks and eight digs and an ace. Junior McKenzie Brockhoff had 14 kills and Frankie Davis had 12 kills, while junior Maddy Cheadle had 15 assists.

North Platte lost its next two matches to Kansas foes.

The host Cyclones won 25-21 and 25-20

Brockhoff had nine kills and seven digs and Cheadle added nine assists and seven digs. Sophomore Brianna Bridger added a pair of aces and blocks, while Davis and Kelsey Reynolds had 10 digs each.

Oskaloosa won 25-20 and 25-20 to end the Panthers’ run. North Platte is now 13-10 overall.

Westwood had 16 digs and two blocks, tied with Brianna Bridger, leading the defense. Cheadle had seven assists and three aces. Brockhoff and Davis had six kills each, while Davis added a team-high eight assists.

West Platte 2, Plattsburg 0

The Bluejays swept past the Tigers 2-0 in a KCI road match on Thursday, Oct. 4 in Plattsburg, Mo., winning 25-15 and 25-22.

Daire Stelljes and Lara Lieske had five kills each, while Faith Stevens led the Bluejays in digs (four) and assists (seven). Tori Norman had four aces and Lexie Smither added two blocks.

The win bumped West Platte to 4-0 in league play.

North Platte 2, East Buchanan 0

The Panthers roared past the Bulldogs 25-21 and 25-16 in a KCI match on Thursday, Oct. 4 in Gower, Mo.

Junior McKenzie Brockhoff had 11 kills, six digs and an ace and classmate Maddy Cheadle had 15 assists. Sophomore Brianna Bridger had three blocks and two aces and Frankie Davis added eight kills.

Bishop LeBlond 2, West Platte 1

The Blue Jays won the first set against the Golden Eagles but didn’t win the match in a 25-19, 21-25 and 22-25 home non-conference defeat on Tuesday, Oct. 2 in Weston, Mo.

Facing a perennial power, Faith Stevens had 15 assists, while Daire Stelljes had 11 kills. Lexie Smither had eight digs, Lara Lieske had six aces and Samantha Rotterman had a pair of blocks for West Platte.
