Suburban softball roundup: Trojans post 3-0 mark in tournament

Park Hill wrapped up another tournament undefeated.

The Trojans posted a 3-0 mark at the Park Hill South/Winnetonka Tournament, held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20-21.

Park Hill closed with an 8-1 victory against Liberty North on Saturday at Tiffany Hills Sports Complex in Kansas City North. 

Earlier this year the Trojans went 5-0 at the Greater Kansas City Softball Tournament.

All of the runs scored by the Trojans came in the first three innings and Kaylyn Jones threw a two-hitter on the mound.

The contest was ended in the bottom of the fourth due to a lightning delay and the contest never resumed.

Chloe Strickland and Grace Woods each homered in the win for Park Hill. Strickland hit a two-run blast in the third inning, while Woods had a solo home run to start the scoring in that inning.

Kennedy Townsend doubled home a run and scored on Shelby Sanders’ RBI single in the second inning. Samantha Bertoncino grounded out to bring home another run.

Woods hit an RBI single in the first inning, while Townsend scored on a wild pitch.

Townsend, Sanders and Woods all had two hits for Park Hill (9-3).

Blue Springs 1, Park Hill South 0

The only run came on a solo home run from Savannah Maynard in the third inning on Saturday, Sept. 21.

Park Hill South had the tying run at third base in Annabelle Winter in the bottom of the sixth after she had a one-out double but she was left stranded.

The inning prior, the Panthers got a double from Cara Sparks, which moved Hadley Uribe to third base with one out. An intentional walk to Chantice Phillips loaded the bases before a pop up and grounder ended the scoring threat.

The Panthers had a runner thrown out at third base in the fourth inning and Phillips was left stranded at third after a double in the third inning.

Park Hill 3, Staley 2

Grace Woods hit a game-winning RBI single to lift the Trojans to a win in their opening game on Friday, Sept. 20.

Kali Day opened with a single and her courtesy runner, Rylee Schmitt, took second on a wild pitch. On a 2-2 count, Woods singled to left for the final run.

The game ended with one out in the sixth due to a time limit.

Park Hill went up 2-0 in the first before Staley tied it in the fourth on Lauren Tourillot’s single.

The Trojans got an RBI single by Day and Kennedy Townsend scored on an error after a leadoff walk in the first.

Day and Miranda LaMunyon had two hits each for Park Hill. Kaylyn Jones fanned 11 in six innings to earn the win.

Park Hill 17, Oak Park 1

The Trojans had an eight-run inning to cap off a five-inning victory in the second game of the tournament on Friday, Sept. 20.

Grace Woods had three hits and three RBIs for Park Hill, while Miranda LaMunyon had three RBIs on two hits. Samantha Bertoncino and Shelby Sanders each had two hits and two RBIs.

Woods had a two-run single in the final inning and Bertoncino had a two-run single in the second.

Sanders struck out four and gave up two hits on the mound.

Park Hill South 11, Willard 1

Meggen Keller drove in five runs to spark the Panthers to a win in the second game on Friday, Sept. 20.

She had a two-run single in the fifth inning and on that play a third run scored on an error.

Keller had an RBI single in the fourth inning and had a two-run double in the five-run third inning.

Annabelle Winter had a two-run single in the third inning.

Jessie Hagen earned the win by throwing a three-hitter and added a double at the plate.

Lee’s Summit 6, Park Hill South 3

The Tigers scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth and rallied for a win on Monday, Sept. 23 in Lee’s Summit.

The Panthers led 3-1 after the top of the sixth inning before the lead slipped away in the Suburban Conference Red Division game.

Leslie Callahan had a two-run double in the third inning for the first runs of the game for Park Hill South. Annabelle Winter singled to bring home Jessie Hagen, who doubled with two outs in the sixth inning.

Platte County 6, Kearney 2

After an hour weather delay, the Pirates scored six unanswered to pick up a conference win against the Bulldogs on Thursday, Sept. 19.

Down 1-0 at the time, Platte County scored two runs in the second to lead for good.

Two errors allowed Halle Magee and Madison Shields to reach and each scored on a passed ball.

The next inning, Magee hit a sacrifice fly and Ana Cesaro drew a bases-loaded walk.

Starting pitcher Emma Koeneke aided her win with an RBI single in the third. Another error by Kearney — four total were committed — led to the final run for the Pirates.

Platte County and Kearney each had three hits.

Blue Springs 6, Park Hill 5

Miranda LaMunyon singled home a run to pull the Trojans within a run, but a fly ball ended the game the next batter and the Wildcats escaped with a one-run win on Thursday, Sept. 19.

The Trojans built a 4-1 lead in the Suburban Conference Gold Division game but then fell behind after Blue Springs rallied in the fifth to take a lead. An insurance run in the sixth was key as Park Hill got a run back in the bottom of the seventh.

Platte County 8, Smithville 0

Emma Koeneke threw a three-hit shutout to lift the Pirates over the Warriors in a Suburban Conference Blue Division game on Tuesday, Sept. 17. She added 10 strikeouts in seven innings of work.

The Pirates scored three runs in the first inning and added four more in the fourth to account for the offense in the victory.

Paige Rocha drove in a pair of runs on a single and a ground out and also scored a run on a passed ball.

Halle Magee, Gracie Erickson, Madison Carter, Grace Heater and Koeneke also had RBIs.

Erickson and Koeneke had two hits each.

Park Hill 8, Blue Springs South 7

The Trojans scored four runs between the fifth and sixth innings to rally for a Suburban Conference Gold Division win over the defending Class 4 state champions on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Park Hill led 4-1 early but trailed 5-4 going into the top of the fifth. A three-run inning gave Park Hill the lead temporarily.

Kali Day and Grace Woods hit home runs and an error on Blue Springs South made it 7-5. The Wildcats tied it in the bottom half of the inning. Woods got the game-winning RBI in the sixth inning when she drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs.

Blue Springs South had the tying run on second base in the bottom of the seventh but Park Hill starter Kaylyn Jones got a ground ball to end it. She struck out five and gave up four earned runs.

Woods drove in five, three coming on a double in the third inning. Only five players had hits for Park Hill, but each had two: Woods, Kennedy Townsend, Shelby Sanders, Day and Kaydence Small.
