Suburban swimming: Pirates set record again

Platte County broke the school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay for the second straight meet.

On Saturday, Nov. 2, the Pirates reset the mark with a time of 1:31.05 at the Suburban Conference Blue Division championship in Lee’s Summit.

That was one of two school records broke and Platte County had two automatic qualifying times during the two-day event.

The Pirates were second overall in the team standings, coming in 13 points behind Kearney.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Joe Ragone, Rhett Spell, Baxter Stone and Blake Bills swam 1:31.05, breaking the mark of 1:33.24 set the meet prior on Tuesday, Oct. 15. The original record held the top spot from 2006 to 2019. 

Platte County won two other events.

Stone won the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.86 to earn an automatic state cut. 

Spell captured first in the 50 freestyle in 22.59 and Bills was third in the same event.

Dye took second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.37 in the finals. In the prelims, he swam 56.99 to earn an automatic bid at state in the event.

The Pirates also broke the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:41.86, featuring Dye, Stone, Ragone and Spell. The team finished third in the meet with that time.

Other third-place finishes for Platte County went to the 400 freestyle; Ragone in the 200 freestyle; Dye in the 100 butterfly and Luke Harms in the 500 freestyle.

On Sunday, Nov. 10, MSHSAA will release who qualified for the state meet later that week in St. Peters.

Suburban Gold

Park Hill placed third in the Suburban Gold meet held Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1-2 in Lee’s Summit.

The Trojans racked up 256 points, finishing behind Lee’s Summit North (480) and Lee’s Summit West (536).

The highest finish went to Alex Dunlevy, who placed second in the 200-yard individual medley. He added a third place medal in the 100 butterfly.

Jacob Fickenscher was third in the 200 freestyle.
