Tapp to head county’s EDC

In June, Platte County Economic Development Council (EDC) executive director Alicia Stephens announced her retirement as soon as her replacement could be found.

Matthew Tapp

The executive committee of the EDC announced the selection of Matthew Tapp as the PCEDC’s new executive director late last month. He will begin his role Monday, Sept. 23. Tapp is the organization’s third director in its 31-year history.

Tapp most recently has served as the economic development director for the City of Raymore, a position he held for four years. Prior to that, he was the director of planning and zoning for Clay County for seven years.

“Matt brings significant experience across many facets of economic development,” said Dale Brouk, EDC chairman. “We are glad that the PCEDC found such a tremendously qualified candidate literally in our own backyard – Matt lives in Platte County.”

According to a statement released by the EDC, Tapp brings experience in business recruitment and retention and community planning. Due to his background, he has built a network over the years with site selection professionals, real estate brokers, economic development professionals and developers. With his public sector experience, Tapp knows and understands the processes needed to get a project over the finish line. Operationally, he has led and managed staff to achieve the organization’s plan of work — its goals and objectives. Because of his multi-faceted talents and skills, Tapp is comfortable interacting with elected officials, company CEOs and community leaders.

“I am incredibly honored and excited to work for my friends and neighbors in Platte County,” Tapp said. “I pledge that I will work my hardest to continue the successes the PCEDC has achieved and build off of them. Because the PCEDC is a well-oiled organization, the transition will be a smooth one. I am looking forward to helping to shape Platte County’s future.

Matt holds a master’s degree in business administration, American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) accreditation and more than 19 years of experience in economic development, community planning and real estate development. He is working toward his economic development certification which is slated for completion in 2021
