As Wear House and More approaches its 30th year in business in Platte City it remains a popular venue for both buyers and sellers alike.
The store was established in 1992 as Nearly New by Terri Clark, who after years of frequenting consignment stores decided to open a store herself.
“As a child growing up in Iowa I remember playing store with my family’s clothes. I enjoyed laying them out pretending,” Clark said.
In 1992 her family relocated to Platte City for her husband’s work and Clark thought Platte City was in need of an apparel store.
“Back then, very few people knew or understood what consignment clothing was, versus thrift store,” Clark said. ”We are particular about the items that we accept for our customers, then we price it to sell and pay a portion of that back to the consignor.”
Times have changed since the store debuted in ‘92 when Clark kept track of the growing inventory by hand. Using computers to keep track of inventory, paying the consignors and monitoring sales has made her job much easier.
Clark said people can even view online the status of their consignments, when they have sold, and for what price.
“We display all of our clothing by department, size then color so shopping is easy and convenient for our customers,” Clark said.
The store carries men’s, women’s, junior’s, plus-sizes and children’s clothing.
After 10 years of operating the business, in 2002 Clark and her husband purchased the building at 15325 Knighton Ave. off I-29 at exit 19. The spacious building allows sales items such as consignment furniture and home decor that smaller stores can’t accommodate. With the evolution and growth of Facebook and Craigslist resales new furniture from Ashley Furniture Company has been added to the inventory.
The store’s popularity prompted Clark to open a second store in Branson called Clothing Exchange.
“I am blessed to have a staff, headed by my manager Jamie Reynolds, that operates Wear House and More so that I can grow the store in Branson,” Clark said.
