West Platte knocked out of districts early

WINDSOR – Having to travel more than two hours for a postseason football game, West Platte (3-7) came up short against the No. 2 seed in the Class 1 District 3 Tournament on Nov. 3.

West Platte’s Dalton Woodard ran for 22 yards in the postseason loss to Windsor on Nov. 3.

After claiming the No. 7 seed in the tournament, West Platte had to take on Windsor (7-3) on the road. The Greyhounds have had a high-powered offense this fall, averaging 29.5 points per game and that was no different in the postseason game.

Entering the night with three consecutive victories and five of the last six, Windsor walked away with a 39-0 win. West Platte trailed 14-0 at the end of the first quarter and 25-0 at the break before the game got out of hand in the second half with a running clock.

Including the postseason defeat, West Platte ended the fall with a 3-game losing skid and fell short in five of its last six games. The Blue Jays were shut out in their first and last contest of the year but scored at least 20 points on six occasions.

Although the season ended earlier than the Blue Jays wanted, six players earned KCI Conference honors, along with other milestones. Junior Kane Cogan finished the year with 1,355 passing yards – the most by any quarterback in the Jim Newsted era – and seven touchdowns.

Senior running back Dominic Williams, senior wide receiver Cohen Kite and sophomore Alex Kinslow all had their seasons end short with various injuries. Williams and Kite played more games than Kinslow and earned KCI honors.

Williams led the team in all-purpose yards with 871 along with a team-high 15 touchdowns, becoming the only 1st team selection in the KCI among Blue Jay players. Kite was a KCI Conference Honorable Mention cornerback after leading the team with three picks, but also had an impressive season offensively with 17 catches for 324 yards and three scores.

Jhett Chandler and Gunner Smith were honorable mentions on the defensive side of the ball. Chandler led the team with 70 tackles in addition to two interceptions – one of which he returned for a touchdown – and Smith had 63 total tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery.

Freshman Blaze Masoner led the team in receiving yards with 380 and also had two touchdowns, becoming an honorable mention. Marshall Winker was the last KCI Conference Honorable Mention as an offensive lineman.

Freshman Brady McMillan only played defense in the last four games and compiled 51 tackles, putting him 4th on the team in that category. West Platte will have some talented underclassmen returning.
