WESTON – For the first time this season, the West Platte football team (3-4) played turnover-free football, which turned into a big conference win on Oct. 6.
All season long, West Platte has had some struggles with taking care of the football, but that changed in the 33-20 win over Lathrop (2-5). With two more KCI Conference contests left ahead of the postseason, the Blue Jays finally are able to put a notch in the win column in conference play.
The first half was low scoring as West Platte had an early 14-6 lead before going into the locker room knotted up. Dominic Williams ran in for a 60-yard score and Dalton Woodard had a short run.
The Blue Jays had the ball as deep as the Mules 12-yard line in the second quarter but couldn’t turn that into points. Cohen Kite has been the top vertical threat for West Platte all season long so when the senior missed the game with an injury, the offense looked a lot different.
The Blue Jays relied heavily on the running game, only completing one pass on the night with a single digit amount of pass attempts. Woodard ran for three scores and Williams added two touchdowns.
West Platte scored the only third quarter touchdown, but Lathrop fought back to bring the game within one possession. The Blue Jays went on to pull out the victory, 33-20.
West Platte has now won four straight games against Lathrop with the last loss being in 2018. The Blue Jays are currently sitting in fifth place in district standings and will head to North Platte (6-1) on Oct. 13.
