West Platte softball beats DeKalb, can't end KCI skid

West Platte allowed the first six runs and didn’t score until the bottom of the fourth in a 10-1 KCI Conference loss Thursday, Sept. 14 at Benner Park in Weston, Mo.

West Platte managed just two hits with an error and a triple for Kaitlin Larison cutting Hamilton’s lead to 6-1. Karah Dunham pitched all seven innings for the Bluejays and was charged with all 10 runs — only five earned — on 13 hits and a walk.

West Platte dropped to 0-3 in KCI play, still seeking the first league win since 2014. The next league game was scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 19 vs. Lawson.

West Platte 5, DeKalb 4

The Bluejays gave up an early lead, came back and then held on for a win Tuesday, Sept. 12 at Benner Park in Weston, Mo.

Sydney Sweden, who went 1-for-3 with three RBIs, broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out single. Sikoya Richard doubled earlier in the inning to score Alyssa Knox with the tying run.

Dunham, who earned the win, gave up a two-out solo home run in the seventh then allowed back-to-back singles before closing out West Platte’s win with the tying and go-ahead runs on base. She scattered seven hits and two walks in seven innings while striking out four.

West Platte led 2-0 after the first.

Larison hit a one-out double, and Lea Moose followed with a triple. After a walk to Dunham, Sweden scored Moose with a groundout.

A walk and an error led to three unearned runs for DeKalb in the second, and the Tigers held the 3-2 lead until the fifth. Knox led off with a double for West Platte, and Richard followed with her double.

Moose walked with one out, and after a double steal, both runners were in scoring position, setting up Sweden’s go-ahead hit.
