West Platte went winless in a trip to the Bishop LeBlond Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 23 in St. Joseph, Mo. The Bluejays came out of pool play at 0-2-1 after a draw with Chillicothe, and a bracket loss to Midway ended their day.
In the two-set tie with Chillicothe, West Platte won the opening set 25-19 but dropped the second 25-22. Ciara Davies — a senior middle hitter — supplied nearly all of the Bluejays’ offense with 12 of 13 kills, while sophomore setter Faith Stevens had three service aces to go with 10 assists.
Davies also added five blocks.
Matched up with Midway, West Platte struggled at the start and didn’t recover in the Vikings’ 25-13, 25-20 victory. Davies had five kills and two blocks, while freshman Lexie Smither recorded a team-high six digs.
West Platte’s two losses to open pool play came against LeBlond and KC Lutheran — a Class 1 District 15 foe.
LeBlond scored a dominant 25-15, 25-13 victory in the opener. The Bluejays managed just seven kills against the Class 2 powerhouse — four for Davies and three for sophomore Sam Rotterman — while making 11 attack errors.
Lutheran won 25-23, 25-15 in the second match of the day with West Platte managing just 10 kills — three apiece for Rotterman and Smither. Davies recorded three blocks, and Stevens had eight assists and six digs.
Finishing up a tough week, West Platte stood at 8-9-3 overall facing a quick rematch with LeBlond scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 26. The Bluejays entered that winless in their past six.
Mid-Buchanan 2, West Platte 0
The Bluejays suffered their first KCI Conference loss in a tight two-set sweep Thursday, Sept. 21 in Faucett, Mo.
Mid-Buchanan took the first set 30-28 and then held on for a 25-22 win in the second during a matchup between two of the league’s top teams. The Bluejays had six aces in the loss — two apiece for Stevens and senior Karen Knox — while Davies led the defense with five blocks.
West Platte dropped to 2-1 in league play entering a Thursday, Sept. 28 league matchup at Plattsburg.
Lawson 2, North Platte 0
The Panthers returned after a week off with a KCI loss Thursday, Sept. 21 in Lawson, Mo. McKenzie Brockhoff and Frankie Davis had three kills apiece, while Bri Bridger added three blocks for North Platte.
Lone Jack 2, West Platte 0
The Bluejays’ attack struggled in a 25-14, 25-11 on Tuesday, Sept. 19 in Weston, Mo.
Rotterman led West Platte in kills with seven, but the Bluejays made 12 attack errors. Smither had two of their three service aces in the loss.
