Heavy rainfall is kicking off the spring rise on the Platte River, forecast to cause minor flooding in the usual problem areas this later this week.
Early Tuesday, March 16 Kansas City’s Emergency Operations Center issued a warning the Platte River was rising. At that time, the river was at 18 feet, with 20 feet considered flood stage.
The river is expected to crest Thursday afternoon at more than 23 feet, causing flooding in cropland in Tracy and at Humphrey’s Access area south of Platte City.
Minor flooding is also expected at Sharp’s Station along Interurban Road.
The river is expected to remain high for the remainder of the week.
The extended forecast calls for periodic rain, including the possibility of thunderstorms, over the next 10 days.
