Platte County is dotted with major road construction projects this year, with most scheduled to extend over the next several months – and even years for some projects.
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) reports the closure of the southbound Interstate 29 exit to Highway 92 will continue until at least early June, with the overall $3.7 million project expected to wrap up in late fall or early winter.
This project — which is a cooperative effort between MoDOT and the City of Platte City — will help improve the intersection at Prairie View Road and Running Horse Road to the city limits, east of I-29. Intersection improvement west of the interstate includes additional turn lanes, pedestrian crosswalks, signal replacement and a new signal at the southbound I-29 ramps. The project will incorporate a multi-use pedestrian path on the south side of Hwy. 92.
Beginning Monday, May 17, Highway 45 Spur at Hwy. 92 will close for construction of a roundabout. The closure will last until at least mid-June, dependent upon weather. The $1.8 million roundabout project came out of a traffic study conducted in 2016 on the Centennial Bridge and will be completed by winter.
Further south, combined projects to rebuild I-29 bridges at Northwest 56th Street and Waukomis Drive kicked off this year and will continue into 2023. The cost for both bridges is about $7 million, and funded through the state “focus on bridges” program to replace 250 bridges across the state.
The Waukomis bridge was originally built in 1957 and widened in 1974. It carries around 90,000 vehicles per day. The 56th Street bridge was built in 1967 and carries 55,000 vehicles per day.
The current focus is on the 56th Street bridge, with work on the Waukomis bridge set to begin next year. Currently, 56th Street is closed between Roanridge and Prairie View roads, as are the I-29 ramps, through at least mid-November. Lane reductions on I-29 will also be in effect through mid-November. The Gateway ramp to I-29 northbound and the Interstate 635 northbound ramp to I-29 will also be closed through mid-November.
