Williams’ monster night leads Jays over Bulldogs in shootout

WESTON – Senior running back Dominic Williams erupted for 235 yards and five touchdowns in a shootout with the South Harrison football team (0-2) as West Platte (1-1) got back to .500 in a 45-36 win on Sept. 1.

Williams averaged 10.5 yards per carry on a day that the Blue Jays bounced back from a tough season opening loss where they were shut out. West Platte had 298 total yards on the ground and produced 458 total yards.

Williams scored the first two touchdowns of the night to put South Harrison down 14-0 early before senior Braxton Booth ran in from 10 yards out and the Bulldogs converted on a 2-point conversion. Kane Cogan threw the first passing touchdown of his junior year when he found Kohen Kite for a 40-yard receiving touchdown, making the score 27-16 after a missed extra point.

Williams added one more score in the first half on a 36-yard rush to put West Platte ahead 33-16 at the break. South Harrison made some halftime adjustments as sophomore Crae Coffey scored on a pair of 2-yard runs.

Entering the fourth quarter, West Platte led South Harrison 33-30. Williams pushed the margin back to two possessions on a 61-yard run, but the 2-point conversion failed.

Booth ran in for another score with 3:14 left and the Bulldogs brought the game back within a field goal, 39-36. Less than a minute later, Williams put the game away and ran into the end zone for the fifth time with 2:38 on the clock.

South Harrison was unable to respond, and West Platte won 45-36. Cogan completed 10 of his 18 passes for 160 yards, led by Kite who had four receptions for 106 yards as the duo was responsible for both touchdowns through the air.

Jaxon Davis and Gunner Smith had six solo tackles, which led the team. Kite had five solo tackles and five assisted tackles as Xane Masoner had two solo tackles and one assisted tackle, while they both intercepted a pass.

Alex Kinslow has shined early on for the West Platte defense and the sophomore ended the night with three solo tackles, two assisted tackles and an interception. Kinslow left the game with a collarbone injury and will miss some time while he gets surgery and recovers.

West Platte has now won the last three matchups against South Harrison. The Blue Jays will start conference play when they host Mid-Buchanan (1-1) on Sept. 8.
