Wrestlers from Platte County and Park Hill were selected to compete in the 2018 Metro Classic that will be held Tuesday, March 6, in Kansas City, Kan.
The 26th Annual ‘Battle at the Border’ Senior All-Star wrestling dual will start at 6:30 p.m. at Kansas City (Kan.) Community College in Kansas City, Kan.
State champions Sage Smart and Cody Phippen, along with medalist Dakota Schmidt and Austin Kincaid will represent the Pirates. The quartet helped Platte County finish third in Class 3 at the recent MSHSAA State Wrestling Championships.
For Park Hill, Weston DiBlasi, a third-place finisher in Class 4, will represent the Trojans.
Wrestlers from Kearney, Blue Springs, Staley, Smithville, Rockhurst and Summit Christian Academy comprise the remainder of the Missouri team.
Phippen, bound for Air Force after a 50-3 season, will wrestle down a weight class at 120 and will face Jace Koelzer of Olathe South. The Northern Colorado-bound Koelzer went 44-3 and won the 126 pound title in Class 6A.
DiBlasi will wrestle at 126 and matches up against Jevon Parrish, the Class 6A 138 pound champion from Olathe North. Parrish was 52-2 this year, while DiBlasi went 46-3.
Kincaid, fourth at 132 in Class 3, draws Shawnee Mission Northwest’s Jared Habben. The senior lost his first match at state and wrestled back to take third in Class 6A and finish 42-4 on the year.
Schmidt, coming off a fourth-place showing at 182, will wrestle at 170 and face off against Jon Trowbridge of Basehor-Linwood. A two-time state champion in Class 4A, Trowbridge was 35-1 this year.
Smart draws Class 5A state champion Cordel Duhart of Blue Valley Southwest, who went 38-0 on his way to a second straight title.
Smart posted a 50-5 mark on his way to a title for Platte County.
