Infant dead in I-29 crash

An infant under the age of one died and several other people were injured in a four-vehicle crash involving two semis near Camden Point on Wednesday, Oct. 23.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, a 2019 Peterbilt tractor trailer driven by 57-year-old Samani Mahjouri of Lincoln, Neb. began to skid in the southbound lanes. The truck struck the rear of a 2002 Toyota Corolla driven by 78-year-old Patsy Withrow of Savannah, Mo. A male infant was also in the Corolla, as was Terri Swartz, 44, of St. Joseph.

The Corolla struck the rear of a 2022 Freightliner tractor trailer, driven by 31-year-old Sultan Singh of Manitoba, Canada. The Corolla left the roadway and struck the tree line and the Peterbilt then struck the Freightliner, forcing the Freightliner into a 2022 Ford F-350 driven by Joseph Waxmonski, 47, of Linwood, Kan.

Five people, including the child, were injured in the crash, with the other occupants of the Corolla being transported to North Kansas City Hospital for treatment. The infant was transported to Children’s Mercy Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The Missouri Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash, which occurred in fair weather conditions that afternoon.
