Martin Luther King, Jr., others to be remembered

The Black Ancestors Awareness Campaign (BAAC) and the Weston United Methodist Church (WUMC) have announced their third annual presentation of If These Walls Could Talk, a collaborative celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

“We Have a Dream” is this year’s theme, honoring King and several other great champions of change who have fought for freedom and equality for all people.

The event will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, at Weston United Methodist Church, 533 Main Street Weston.

All are invited to this family-friendly multimedia event. The event explores the good works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and will present the lives, legacies and dreams of Rosa Parks, Malcom X, and Mahalia Jackson.

In this year’s presentation attendees will hear about Parks and her pivotal role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. They will also learn why the United States Congress has honored her as “the First Lady of Civil Rights.”

Attendees will also hear about the profound influence of Malcom X, one of the greatest and most influential African Americans in history.

And last, they will learn about Mahalia Jackson, the Queen of Gospel Song, and her impact on popular culture and the Civil Rights Movement.

There will also be a reenactment of King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

Fellowship and refreshments will follow the program.

If These Walls Could Talk is a Black Ancestors Awareness Campaign and Weston United Methodist Church production. These organizations work together to unite communities through thoughtful programs featuring storytelling, music, dance, drama and multimedia presentations.
