The Platte County Pirates’ softball team bounced back with a big 11-0 win last week after dropping a home game to rival Smithville.
The Warriors scored five runs in the seventh inning to beat Platte County 7-1 last Tuesday, Sept. 3.
Smithville got a run in the second and a run in the third off starter Dani Salisbury. Platte County got a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the lead in half.
Salisbury went all seven innings for the Pirates giving up seven runs on nine hits.
Shortstop Bryli Seifert had three hits for Platte County and scored the only run. Haley Schank, Lillian Talbot, and Marlee Richardson each collected a hit versus Smithville. Schank also drew a walk.
The Pirates bounced back the next day, Wednesday, Sept. 4, to beat Truman 11-0 behind a strong pitching performance by Reagan Ball who went five innings giving up only three hits while striking out two batters.
Platte County scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning but got nine runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning to blow the game open.
Three of Platte County’s hitters in the lineup collected two hits including Salisbury, Gwen Duncan, and Kinleigh Howren.
Salisbury and Richardson each drove in two runs while Duncan, Schank, Howren, and Kelly Bullano each drove in a run. The Pirates walked six times as a team, including two free bases to Schank.
Howren, Bullano, Salisbury, and Richardson each scored two runs. Salisbury had the only extra-base hit with a double, leading the team with three total bases.
The loss to Smithville came on the heels of a big win over the Warriors on Aug. 31. The Pirates cranked out seven hits and walked seven times in the 12-0 blowout during an early season tournament. Platte County also got a win over Holden 8-2 but lost to Kearney 7-5. Platte County opened the tournament with a 15-0 drubbing of Oak Park on Aug. 30 but followed up with a 5-2 loss to Mid-Buchanan later in the day.
Bullano scored three runs while Seifert and Duncan each scored two runs. No Pirate had multiple hits but seven of the nine hitters in the lineup collected hits. Schank picked up three RBIs, and Howren, Seifert, Salisbury, and Duncan each drove in runs.
Ball pitched three innings giving up only one hit while striking out two. Talbot pitched two innings giving up only one hit while striking out a pair.
