Platte City resident files for U.S. Senate seat

An unsuccessful run at a seat in Congress will not deter Platte City resident Dr. Gena Ross from seeking approval from voters to serve in the U.S. Senate.

Ross told the Platte County Citizen last week that she has filed for the open Senate seat in the upcoming 2022 elections in November of that year. Last November Ross tried to unseat longtime Sixth District Congressman Sam Graves, a Republican. Graves went on to win his 11th term in Congress.

Ross is jumping into a field of Democrats with not a lot of experience or name recognition statewide whereas on the Republican side the field is filling up with widely known names including former Gov. Eric Greitens and current state attorney general Eric Schmitt.

Ross said she wasn’t really considering a run at the open Senate seat that is currently held by Republican Roy Blunt. Blunt announced in March that he would not be seeking reelection. Ross said there is important work to be done and she wants to be part of change.

“The only way I fail is by not trying,” Ross said.

Ross said she was also disturbed by what she saw on television Jan. 6, when a mob stormed the U.S. Capitol building while lawmakers were certifying the 2020 presidential election results.

“We’ve got to do better,” Ross said. “We’re all a part of this and we’ve got to work together. All people need to be represented.”
