PLATTE CITY – For more than a month, nothing has been able to stop the Platte County girls’ basketball team (13-2).
In the second season under Eric Mitchell, Platte County has currently won more games in a row that it had in any of the three seasons prior to his arrival. The Lady Pirates have bested their last 10 opponents, which is a vast improvement from winning nine games max in between 2020-2022.
The last time the program had a double-digit winning streak was in 2009 when Platte County was Class 5 State Champions. The Lady Pirates haven’t lost a game since early December with nine of their last 10 wins being by 11 or more points.
Winnetonka (8-6) was on the verge of upsetting Platte County but fell 54-42 on Jan. 18. Addy Schlake scored 11 of her game-high 17 points in the first half to put the Lady Pirates up 34-23.
On two occasions, Winnetonka cut the deficit to eight points in the third quarter but a pair of buckets by Schlake and Lauren Stone pushed the margin to 40-28 ahead of the fourth quarter. Lydia Doole hit a big 3-pointer midway through the final frame to help Platte County hold on to win its seventh straight home game, moving to 7-1 overall in Pirate Fieldhouse.
Doole knocked down four triples on the night, scoring 12 points and totaling six rebounds. Stone ended with 10 points, six rebounds and two steals and Rylee Carr had nine points.
Interestingly enough, this was Platte County’s third straight win of scoring exactly 54 points. St. Joseph’s Central (0-17) was beat by 35 points on Dec. 11 and Grain Valley (9-5) was outscored by 11 points on Jan. 16.
Platte County pushed the winning streak to 10 with a victory when William Chrisman (4-10) came to town and lost 61-28 on Jan. 25. The Lady Pirates will head to Kearney (3-11) on Jan. 24.
