Robbery suspect dies in wrong-way crash

A man accused of a string of convenience store robberies in both Platte and Clay counties died in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 435 Tuesday morning. 

According to the Kansas City Police Department, the crash occurred around 4:30 a.m. on northbound I-435 near Highway 210 in Clay County. 

Earlier in the night, the suspect allegedly robbed the Mini-Mart on Barry Road and the Shell Gas Station on Northwest 64th Street. One shot was fired at the Shell station but no one was injured.

The suspect also allegedly robbed the Pilot Gas Station on Birmingham Road near Ameristar Casino.

The suspect then fled south on the northbound lanes of I-435 and crashed into another vehicle. Both drivers were killed in the collision. No one else was injured in the crash. 

I-435 was closed at Front Street for several hours during the police investigation, which is ongoing.
