According to court documents, police responded to the Platte County Target off Skyview Avenue a little before 2 p.m. Friday. Several witnesses saw a black male steal a cart full of merchandise, push down a store employee, flee in a dark gray SUV and strike a pedestrian while fleeing. During review of the store’s security footage, a man matching Shariff’s description was seen with a cart of items valued at $800-$850. The loss prevention manager approached the man and pushed the shopping cart away from him, then the man grabbed the cart and pushed the manager into a wall. The man entered a dark gray Jeep and began unloading the merchandise. A witness started recording the suspect, who tried to back up the Jeep, but was blocked by another vehicle. When that vehicle moved the suspect backed up and the witness filming began to walk away. The suspect placed the Jeep in drive, drove toward the witness and drove over a nearby curb to strike the witness with the vehicle.

A couple of hours later, a license plate reader located the Jeep in the area of Parvin Road and Chouteau Trafficway. Police then located the vehicle at a residence off North Bennington. The suspect was spotted near the vehicle and detained.

During an interview with police, Shariff admitted he was shoplifting, because “he has no money.” He also admitted to pushing the Target employee and striking the pedestrian.

At St. Luke’s Hospital, the pedestrian was interviewed and identified Shariff from a photo lineup. This witness received 18 staples to the back of his head and 12 stitches to his knee due to injuries received when struck.
