Weston’s Black Ancestors Awareness Campaign (BAAC) has announced its latest Museum Without Walls project, a commemoration honoring the City of Weston’s Black History. During Black History Month, Weston’s Black Heritage banners were placed in downtown Weston.
Although there were many nominees, BAAC selected 17 honorees to adorn the lampposts down Main Street for 2024. More honorees will be added next year. The public is welcome to view these reintroduction banners designed by Loren Simpelo of notable residents of African descent and three culturally significant locales into Weston’s history. The reverse features a short bio.
Visit the all-new website at baacweston.org to learn more about the project, the banner recipients, and how to become a sponsor. New data is coming in daily and the website is on its way to becoming a Black Archive destination for northwestern Missouri.
Weston Black Heritage banner sponsorship opportunities are available and encouraged and BAAC would like to recognize its major banner contributor, Catha Hall. By becoming a banner sponsor, anyone can assist BAAC’s endeavors to continue its Museum Without Walls initiatives, programs, research, and digitalization of Weston’s Black lineage’s contributions.
The Black Ancestors Awareness Campaign is a nonprofit organization and is a standing committee of the Weston Historical Museum. A sponsorship of $150 per banner is entirely tax deductible.
Lastly, the Blackhawk Walk Monument now stands in Weston’s Ben Holladay Park.
