Weston is now 92 acres larger due to the actions of the Platte County Commission this week.
At the Monday, May 15 commission administrative session, the City of Weston requested the voluntary annexation of 92 acres of county-owned parkland, known as the future West Platte Park, located east of the existing Weston city limits.
District commissioner Joe Vanover said he had been approached by Weston mayor Kent Stelljes. Weston is seeking to expand its borders, paving the way for future development. Vanover noted that the county would still own the land, but would no longer be responsible for planning and zoning responsibilities within the property.
Director of parks Daniel Erickson said additionally the annexation opens the door for future partnerships between the City of Weston and Platte County to develop West Platte Park.
Also at the meeting, commissioners awarded this year’s stormwater grants, funded through the county’s dedicated sales tax for parks, recreation and stormwater abatement. The stormwater grant board reviewed 13 grant applications received this cycle. Recipients include the Walnut Creek Homes Association, Weatherby Lake Improvement Company, City of Tracy, Weatherby Lake Park Board, Villas of Platte Valley Estates, City of Platte Woods, Lake Waukomis Association and the City of Parkville.
Erickson said there is an open seat on the review board and encourages people with experience and interest in stormwater abatement to apply to serve on the board, which meets once a year.
