Numerous veterans events set for Nov. 10-11

While government offices will be shut down Monday in honor of Veterans Day, there will be several special recognitions for veterans County-wide Sunday and Monday. On Sunday, Pack No. 248 of Platte City is hosting its second annual veterans lunch from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 14040 Highway N. Admission is free to veterans and active duty military and their families and includes spaghetti, beverages and dessert. The Weston American Legion, along with Cline’s Opry, will be honoring veterans from 5-7 p.m. Nov. 10 at Cline’s Opry in Weston. All veterans will receive an American flag from American Legion Post No. 501 and there will be a guest speaker. On Veterans Day, the area schools will again be honoring local veterans with celebrations. The West Platte FBLA is inviting all senior citizens and veterans of the Weston community to the annual “In Praise of Age and Veterans” Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Nov. 11 in the cafeteria at West Platte High School. There is no fee to attend this gathering. Following the breakfast is a veteran’s assembly at 9 a.m. All service veterans and guests are also cordially invited to attend the 18th annual “Salute to Veterans” at noon Nov. 11 at North Platte High School. Lunch will be served at noon followed by a program at 1 p.m. The program includes a free lunch for veterans, music, tributes, art show and special guest speaker from Fort Leavenworth, Kan. For more information, contact North Platte High School at 450-3344. Platte City Middle School is also hosting a veterans breakfast from 7-7:30 a.m. Nov. 11. In addition to the schools, other area organizations are also honoring veterans. Senior Star at Wexford Place, 6500 N. Cosby Ave., Kansas City, is hosting a Veterans Day luncheon at noon Nov. 11. Following lunch, they will have a presentation by Dennis Okerstrom, PhD Park University, who has written a book called “The Final Mission of Bottoms Up: A World War II Pilot’s Story.” The hero of the book, Lee Lamar, will attend the event in his military attire. And finally, Parkville VFW Post No. 7356 is holding a free spaghetti dinner for veterans, active duty and reserve military and first responders and their families from 5:30-7 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Post, located at 10125 Tom Watson Parkway in Parkville.
