Guthrie shines, helps West Platte football to 2-0 start

West Platte matched its win total from the regular season last year in Week 2 with a 44-7 win against Wellington-Napoleon on Friday night at Rudolph Eskridge Stadium in Weston, Mo.After going 2-7 in the regular season a year ago, the 2-0 start is a vast improvement in under second-year coach Nate Danneman. Bluejays senior quarterback Cody Guthrie finished with five total touchdowns in Week 2 — three rushing, one passing and one special teams on a 77-yard kickoff return. West Platte won both meetings between the teams a year ago, including a 55-21 victory in the Class 2 District 8 championship game. In the most recent matchup, West Platte led 7-0 at halftime before pulling away behind four of Guthrie’s scores. The first-year signal-caller ran in from 11 and 22 yards and added a 42-yard touchdown strike to tight end Conner Salmons in the final two quarters. Guthrie’s kick return made it 21-7 after the Tigers briefly cut the lead to a single score in the third quarter. Dallas Reynolds added a 4-yard rushing score for West Platte, and Kyle Tabaka took one in from 76 yards out. West Platte travels to East Buchanan this week, a matchup the Bluejays lost 48-45 a year ago in a continuation of a tight series in recent years.
