Harley Davidson’s production facility in Platte County made a CNN list of nine great American factory tours, published on the news organization’s website this week.“Everyone becomes a 5-year-old on a factory tour,” Karen Axelrod, who, with husband Bruce Brumberg, wrote “Watch it Made in the U.S.A.: A Visitor’s Guide to the Best Factory Tours and Company Museums” told CNN.com. “The best ones get you close to the machinery, the sparks, the excitement.” Harley Davidson operates three plants in the United States, but the Vehicle and Powertrain Operations Tour at the Kansas City facility located on North Congress Avenue offers an up-close look at a complete assembly. The article notes the $35 tour is often sold out and requires steel-toed shoes and a safety vest and goggles.
The “Steel Toe Tour” takes a look at the tank, frame and fender manufacturing along with painting and polishing.
The tours run Monday-Thursday from 9:15 a.m. to noon. Tickets can be reserved in advance.
