Baylor Cox scored twice and assisted on two more goals, helping Platte County to a 5-2 victory and the Barstow Tournament championship on Saturday, Aug. 29. The Pirates beat the hosts for the title and won the season-opening tournament for the second time in five years. Chandler Peterson, Mason Hays and Jonah Hoppe also scored in the championship, and Platte County outshot the Knights 17-12.
Cox also scored twice in the tournament opener on Tuesday, Aug. 25 in a 3-2 win against Sacred Heart (Sedalia). Peterson scored the third goal and added an assist.
Platte County stands a 2-0-1 after the tournament thanks to a draw in the middle game with KC Lutheran. Cox, Peterson and Blake Cochran all scored in the 3-3 draw Wednesday, Aug. 26.
During the tournament, Platte County split time between three goalkeepers: Bailey Ride, Turner Hess and Kemper York.
Liberty Kickoff Tournament
A well-timed strike from Logan Crichlow helped Park Hill take third place in the Liberty Kickoff Tournament.
The Trojans senior fired home the lone goal in a 1-0 win against Smithville on Thursday, Aug. 27. The score came off a corner kick that bounded through the box before finding Crichlow, who buried his shot from 15 yards out into the roof of the net.
Smithville had been applying pressure on Park Hill goalkeeper Peyton LaFerla in the moments prior to the goal.
Felipe Silva and Andrew Rich put shots on target in the first half for Park Hill, but Warriors goalkeeper Cole Fuller helped keep the score level until the second half. Crichlow’s goal came in the 52nd minute, and LaFerla maintained the shutout.
Lee’s Summit North 3, Park Hill 2
The Trojans nearly came all the way back to force overtime in their Liberty Kickoff semifinal.
Up 2-0 at halftime, Lee’s Summit North went up three goals in the second half despite six saves from Park Hill goalkeeper LaFerla. However, a penalty kick for Christian Fullmer and a header for Andrew Rich closed the gap to one, but Park Hill couldn’t find an equalizer to force extra time.
Lee’s Summit West 2, Park Hill 1
The Trojans’ first non-tournament game ended with a loss Saturday, Aug. 29 in Lee’s Summit, Mo. Silva put Park Hill up 1-0 with a header from 18 yards out. The Titans scored the winning goal in the 70th minute.
Blue Springs South 2, Park Hill 1, OT
The Trojans’ run of tough losses continued Monday, Aug. 31 in Blue Springs, Mo.
Blue Springs South scored the winner off of a set piece near the end of the second extra time period. Park Hill held a 1-0 lead on left back Stanton Heydinger’s headed goal on an assist from midfielder Paulo Murguia in the 30th minute. The Jaguars tied the score in the next minute, and the 1-1 tie held until deep into overtime.
Having lost three of four, Park Hill was set to play Liberty North on Wednesday, Sept. 2.
Lee’s Summit 1, Park Hill South 0
The Panthers missed on two late chances to grab an equalizer against the Class 4 defending state champions Wednesday, Aug. 26 in Lee’s Summit, Mo.
Lee’s Summit scored the game’s only goal in the eighth minute off of a turnover and made the lead standup. Carson Cavit-Wells nearly tied the score in the 70th minute when he banged a shot off the crossbar. The rebound fell to a teammate, but the Tigers goalkeeper denied the second chance, as well.
In the final two minutes, Danny Gunderson dispossessed the goalkeeper, who was trying to stall. Gunderson’s shot then appeared to flirt with the goal line, but the official did not give the goal. A Lee’s Summit defender cleared the ball away, and the Tigers held on for the win.
Park Hill South goalkeeper Evan Morrow made eight saves.
