A Parkville man continues to be held on $250,000 bond, charged with the armed robbery of Red X in Riverside last month.
Lonnie Bond, 38, is charged with robbery, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm. Bond appeared in court on Tuesday, April 14 via video. He was approved for public defender services but had not yet been assigned one. He is scheduled to appear again at the end of the month for a status check. A request for bond modification was previously denied by judge Quint Shafer.
The incident started with an off-duty Riverside police officer working security at Red X on Sunday, March 22. The officer watched two men in the store, one of whom was Bond. Bond’s strange behavior drew the officer’s attention and he notified the store’s loss prevention officer.
Bond was observed leaving the store with a cart full of goods. In the parking lot, the officer told Bond to stop and go back inside. Bond allegedly shoved the cart toward the officer and ran.
At the intersection of Platte Road and Riverway Boulevard, Bond stopped a vehicle and tried to get into it. The vehicle sped off and the officer saw a firearm in Bond’s hand. The officer unholstered his own weapon and ordered him to drop the gun. Bond ran.
By the time other officers arrived and the suspect was captured, Bond did not have the gun. However, owners of the nursery near where Bond was apprehended heard a thud on the roof. Police located a 10 mm Glock pistol with a round in the chamber on the greenhouse roof.
The stolen groceries had been loaded into the suspect’s vehicle by Bond’s companion, who fled before officers could return to Red X. The accomplice made off with an unknown amount of groceries, including meat.
At the time of his arrest, Bond had 10 active traffic warrants and a history of robbery. During processing, he refused to cooperate with police and would not allow himself to be fingerprinted. When asked if he had recently used narcotics, Bond responded, “deez nuts.”
