All three Platte County schools impress at Suburban Tourney

With the postseason looming ahead in the near future, the Platte County, Park Hill and Park Hill South girls’ tennis teams earned top-4 finishes at the Suburban North Tournament at Oak Park High School on September 24.

Park Hill’s Katie Miller defeated Platte County sophomore Maggie McBratney 8-6 in the third-place match in the Suburban North Tournament at Oak Park High School on September 24.

With Staley taking the crown with 50 points, Park Hill was the runner-up with 48 points and Park Hill South claimed third place overall with 39 points. Platte County was in a tie with North Kansas City for fourth place as both teams ended with 34 points.

A big reason the Lady Pirates were able to finish in the top-4 was with the trip to the doubles championship by Olivia Holbrook and Ellie Fish. Staley’s doubles team of Ava Gates and Chloe McClendon – who entered the tournament as the second-best doubles team – were favorited in an early matchup with Platte County but the Lady Falcons fell, 8-4.

Platte County has had a girls’ tennis program for 15 years and has only won a flight three times, so it was a historical day for Holbrook and Fish. The duo went on to win the B Doubles.

The victory over Staley pushed Holbrook and Fish to a matchup against Park Hill South’s Sophia Nguyen and Campbell Woodbury and the Lady Pirates comfortably won, 8-0. Park Hill’s Avery Whalen and Faith Moise were waiting for the Platte County doubles team in the finals but the Lady Pirates took the match by a score of 8-5.

Park Hill also made some noise in the individual matches, with unseeded Katie Miller earning third place after she took down Platte County sophomore Maggie McBratney 8-6. McBratney, like Miller, was unseeded as an individual.

Park Hill South had the top-seeded doubles team with Hanna Bytyqi and Vivian Hamilton who took down Platte County senior Cosette Stephenson and junior Addy Mayne in quarterfinals, 8-1. The Lady Pirate duo finished in fifth place after taking down St. Joseph’s Central and North Kansas City.
