En route to leading the Park Hill boys’ basketball team (11-6) to a third-place finish in the 48th Annual Lee’s Summit Grill Shoot Out, senior Marqueas Bell became the fifth player in program history to surpass 1,000 career points.
The 6-foot-3 Trojan star has made a name for himself in recent years, especially the last two, as he has been the team’s top scorer in his junior and senior seasons. He never played varsity as a freshman, but was Park Hill’s third leading scorer as a sophomore when he averaged 10.3 points.
Before surpassing 1,000 career points at the tournament in Lee’s Summit, the Southeast Missouri State men’s basketball commit scored 511 points in his junior year alone, which was an average of 19.7 points per game. After pouring out 59 total points in the tournament, the Trojan accomplished what only four others have ever done, break the 4-digits’ points barrier in a career.
Marqueas Bell has now scored over 30 points in three games this season – including a career-high 45 points against Liberty (8-8) on Jan. 13 – most recently in the 78-71 win over Raytown (8-7) in the third-place game of the Lee’s Summit Tournament on Jan. 20. He scored 33 points on 12-of-20 shooting from the field, three-of-nine from deep and six-of-seven from the charity stripe, while also forcing four steals.
While Marqueas Bell scored nearly half of the Trojans’ points on the night, Ty Schreck tied his season-high 13 points when he also dished out four assists. Gavin Schaag knocked down a pair of triples to end with 11 points and Kendrick Bell finished with 10 points, while tying his career-high in rebounds with 15.
Park Hill opened the tournament with a dominant 62-41 victory over Raytown South (1-9) on Jan. 16. Schaag led the way for the Trojans with 16 points when he converted on four-of-seven of his shots from behind the arc, while Marqueas Bell ended with 12 points and three steals.
Park Hill came up short in the next round, losing to Lee’s Summit West 65-50 on Jan. 18, to advance to the third-place game. Marqueas Bell made all five of his free throws to help lead the Trojans with 14 points, while Kendrick Bell ended with 10 points.
Park Hill will look to continue its strong start in conference play – where it currently posts a 3-0 record – when it hosts a Silver Division opponent on Jan. 27. The Trojans will host one of the top teams in the state on the night, taking on Staley (13-1).
