Lane Scott wins 100th career wrestling match

West Platte senior Lane Scott put the cherry on the cake on senior night as he earned his 100th career win when the Blue Jays took down St. Joseph Central and Summit Christian Academy on Jan. 19.

Scott came into the season with a 5th place finish at state his junior year and was right under 80 career wins just waiting for the storybook night to reach number 100. Along with being recognized for being a senior, Scott matched up with 285-pound St. Joseph’s Central Logan Judd and came away with a 48-second pin for another special moment for the night.

West Platte’s Lane Scott earned his 100th career wrestling match on senior night against St. Joseph’s Central on Jan. 19.

Scott has been an impressive wrestler in his time at West Platte and has posted a 25-5 record this year. He also finished in second place in the Lathrop Invite on Jan. 21.

At the Invite, Scott’s only loss was in the first-place match due to a medical forfeit by the West Platte senior. Scott earned a pair of wins against Damian Galvan (Guadalupe Centers Charter) and Crae Coffey (South Harrison).

After the Blue Jays defeated St. Joseph Central 45-30 and Summit Christian Academy 42-24, West Platte came out with a sixth place finish out of 22 teams in the Lathrop Invite. While Scott was the top Blue Jay in the tournament, Canton Wilkins had a third-place finish in the 106-weight class.

Wilkins won by fall over Richmond’s Georgan Happy in 3:08 in the quarterfinals before being pinned by Lathrop’s Garrett Beane in 37 seconds in the semifinals and matched up with Brentwood’s Don Tran in the third-place match. Wilkins pinned Tran in 2:00.

McKanan Reade (138), Peyson Chandler (144) and David Brown (175) all finished in fourth places. Tristan Newkirk and Xavier Williams ended in sixth places in the 150 and 165-weight classes, respectively.

Reade had a first-round bye and then won by fall in 1:33 over Kyler Simone (Lathrop) but was pinned in his next two matches. Chandler opened up the tournament with a 9-2 decision over Memphis Hinton (Summit Christian Academy) and won by fall in 1:11 against Brendon Hoover (South Harrison) before getting pinned to move to the third-place match and losing by a 7-1 decision.

Brown had a first-round bye before he defeated East Atchison’s Sam Litherbury on a 10-1 major decision to advance to the semifinals where he lost the first of two straight losses. Brown was pinned by Isaiah Myers (Lafayette County) in 1:14 and William Dobbins (Versailles) in 5:33.

Newkirk went 2-2 at Lathrop, splitting his four matches with a 4:26 tech fall win, loss by fall in 1:50, 5-3 sudden victory win and lost by a 3:42 pin. Williams fell short in two of his three matches with his sole win being in the consolation round when he pinned Polo’s Cooper Fox in 1:32.
