Blue Jays take down Maysville and Lexington, fall to Van Horn in home quad

The West Platte boys’ wrestling team won two of three in the Blue Jays’ home quad against Lexington, Maysville and Van Horn on Jan. 10.

West Platte senior Tristan Newkirk won by fall in his two matches against Lexington and Maysville in the home quad at West Platte on Jan. 10.

West Platte comfortably beat Maysville 45-21 and Lexington 47-30 but were beaten by Van Horn 48-36. In the match with Lexington, there were five forfeits as 18 of Lexington’s 30 points were in open matches.

Jhett Chandler (126) started the match off with a 16-0 technical fall before McKanan Reade (138) was pinned in 29 seconds. Peyson Chandler, Tristan Newkirk and Xavier Williams gave the Blue Jays a 35-18 lead as the trio all had pins in their respective weight classes.

David Brown was pinned in 2:38 in the 175-weight class, but Garett Moritz and Lane Scott responded by wins by fall in the 190 and 215-weight classes. The Blue Jays went on to win by 17 points.

In the sole loss of the day, West Platte fell behind 18-6 early against Van Horn when Jhett Chandler was the only one of the first three Blue Jay wrestlers to come out with a victory. The 126-pound wrestler had a pin in 5:03 before Colton DePetre lost by fall in the 132-weight class.

Once again, Peyson Chandler, Newkirk and Williams won their matches by fall to put West Platte up 24-18. The next weight class was left open, so the match got tied at 24.

Brown and Moritz were pinned to give Van Horn a 12-point lead and Scott brought the match within reaching distance with a 2:53 pin but it was too little, too late. Van Horn was able to win with the final weight class being left open and West Platte surrendering six more points.

West Platte bounced back against Maysville, although the Blue Jays fell behind 9-6 early. West Platte was rewarded 12 points by forfeit and Peyson Chandler earned a 2-1 decision in the 144-weight class. Williams (157) lost by fall in 1:35, but Scott (215) won by fall in 2:47 to help the Blue Jays win by 24.
