Blue Jays win three of last four, move to 4-2 on season

For two straight games, the West Platte baseball team (4-2) scored 11 runs and came away with a comfortable victory.

West Platte senior Ezra Stigman struck out eight batters against Penney on March 30.

West Platte headed to Bishop LeBlond (1-2) and came out with an 11-4 win on March 28. This was a revenge game as the Blue Jays were sent home by the Eagles in the Class 2 District 15 Tournament last postseason.

Dating back to 2012, Bishop LeBlond had won seven of the last nine regular season matchups before the most recent game. The Blue Jays erupted for nine hits and scored at least one run in every inning.

Gunner Smith and Xavier Reynolds opened the game with a pair of singles, with both of them scoring in the first inning. Cohen Kite had a ground out RBI to send Smith across home plate and Reynolds scored on a later error.

Bishop LeBlond cut at the deficit by scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning off a West Platte error. With the score being 2-1, West Platte doubled its score in the top of the second inning when Alex Allison had a ground out RBI and Jhett Chandler scored on a passed ball.

The Eagles scored a pair of runs with a sacrifice fly and a double to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the second inning. West Platte wasted no time going back on top, putting one run on the board when Jaxon Turner grounded out.

The Blue Jays added three more runs in the ensuing inning thanks to having four of their first six batters being walked as Allison was walked in for a run with the bases loaded and Turner responded with a 2-RBI single, making the score 8-4. West Platte scored one more run in each of the last three innings and Bishop LeBlond went scoreless the rest of the way.

Reynolds, Turner and Chandler all had two hits led by Turner with three RBIs. Smith was on the mound for four innings and Reynolds pitched for three innings and they both struck out six batters.

West Platte went on to beat Penney (1-5) by double digits for the second straight time by a score of 11-1 on March 30. The Hornets had their first baseball program a season ago when the Blue Jays came out on top 12-2 as West Platte is 2-0 against Penney all-time.

West Platte only allowed one hit and put the contest away with five runs in the fifth inning to come out on top by 10. Smith had three hits and two RBIs and Kite had two hits and three RBIs.

Ezra Stigman struck out eight batters in five innings in the Blue Jays’ first KCI Conference win of the spring. West Platte will host North Platte (2-3) on April 6.
