Park Hill South and Park Hill swimmers dotted the consolation finals at the MSHSAA Swimming & Diving Championships
The highest finish on the weekend came from Sydney Staebell, a sophomore from Park Hill South that took ninth in the 200-yard individual medley on Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Rec-Plex in St. Peters.
Her time of 2:13.62 was a full second drop from her prelims to win the consolation finals to earn honorable mention all-state. Teammate Emma Clark, a junior, took 13th in the same race with a time of 2:14.95.
Clark and Staebell were part of the 200-yard medley relay team with sophomore Natalie Maris and junior Christine Hwang took 10th in 1:52.58. Park Hill’s team of freshmen Gabby Culp and Aspyn Howard, senior Emma Will and sophomore Arielle Janssens placed 13th in 1:55.35.
Hwang added an 11th-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (24.96), while teammate Lola Reuscher was 17th, just missing the consolation finals by a millisecond.
Staebell was 10th in the 100-yard butterfly, a jump of three spots after the prelims.
The Panthers’ 200-yard freestyle relay team of Reuscher, junior Amelia Lee, senior Sophia Jaeger and Hwang placed 10th, a spot lower than prelims.
Maris was 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke for South, moving up after entering as the 16th seed.
In the 100-yard backstroke, Park Hill’s Culp took 15th and South’s Clark was 16th.
The 400-yard freestyle relay from South with Reuscher, Lee, Staebell and Clark was 12th in the final race of the event.
Park Hill South took 14th in the team standings with 70 points, while Park Hill finished 28th with 10 points.
Other state qualifiers and finishers were: Culp was 20th in the 200-yard freestyle; South’s Maris was 23rd, Park Hill’s Will took 24th, Janssens took 26th and South’s Ruby Livingston took 30th in the 200-yard IM; Lee was 20th and teammate Brayden Adams was 30th in the 50 freestyle; Park Hill junior Katie Stephenson took 17th in the diving, followed by Park Hill South freshman Madelyn Stephens (23rd), Park Hill South junior Chloe Bowman (26th) and Park Hill senior Jaden Galang (30th); Park Hill junior Emily Fickenscher was 28th in the 100 butterfly; Hwang (24th), Reuscher (26th) and Jaeger (32nd) competed in the 100 freestyle; Janssens was 21st for Park Hill in the 500 freestyle; Park Hill’s 200-yard freestyle team of Fickenscher and sophomores Emma Owen, Elaina Ginset and Leila Kramer was 27th; Park Hill’s Will (18th) and South’s Adams (21st), Madi McNeary (22nd) and Livingston (23rd) competed in the 100 backstroke; Howard took 24th in the 100 breaststroke; in the 400-yard freestyle relay, Park Hill’s team of Janssens, Fickenscher, Will and Culp was 22nd.
