Platte County Commissioners approved amended federal stimulus grants this week.
Still meeting at the Platte County Resource Center in Kansas City due to work at the Platte County Courthouse in Platte City, commissioners held their regular administrative session Monday, Aug. 2.
Captain Tony Avery, county emergency manager, presented the federal grants related to the COVID-19 pandemic and stimulus packages. While the county last spring applied for about $235,000 in funding through the state emergency management administration (SEMA), due to changes in the requirements of the federal programs it would now receive about $196,000, leading to a shortfall of $33,000. Commissioners questioned if this shortfall would impact operations, but Avery said it mostly affected the salaries of himself and Mike O’Neil, also with the sheriff’s office, and those shortfalls will be absorbed through other grants, including the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
Major Erik Holland said the total budget impact was lessened since another grant helped cover the procedural shortfall created when the federal government shifted its requirements.
The second grant approved was for approximately $32,800 in ARPA funds.
