Kennedi Dorrell earned her first career win as a head coach when the Park Hill girls’ basketball team (1-1) came away with a 33-22 win over Grandview (1-2) in the opening round of the Cardinal Division Bracket in the 43rd Annual Winnetonka Invitational on Nov. 28.
After dropping the season opener, 55-44, to Truman (1-0) on Nov. 11, Park Hill bounced back with a low-scoring victory. The first eight minutes in the tournament was a slugfest when the Lady Bulldogs held a 4-3 lead.
Maddie Crump hit a 3-pointer early in the first quarter, but the Lady Trojans didn’t score again until the second quarter, missing all four of their free throw attempts in the opening frame. Lauren Bogle knocked down a left corner trey with 1:36 left in the half to put Park Hill up 11-10 at the break.
The Lady Trojans surpassed their first half point total in the third quarter alone when Lydia Keller and Izzy Petznick both made a shot from behind the arc and Anaya Guess scored all four of her points. Grandview only made one shot and entered the fourth quarter trailing 23-12.
Boston Wand scored six of her game-high eight points in the final frame to help put the game away. Crump scored six points – with both of her made field goals being from downtown – and Keller ended with five points.
In the 11-point season opening defeat, sophomores Keller and Guess led the offense in a losing effort. Keller made six of her 11 shots – including four of seven from deep – and scored 17 points and Guess ended with 10 points on 50 percent shooting.
Miah Crockett, Cali Richards and Wand all had two steals in the contest as Park Hill forced 14 Truman turnovers. With the win over Grandview, Park Hill advances to the winning side of the Cardinal Bracket and will take on Grain Valley (1-0) on Nov. 29 at 5:30 p.m.
