Golfers punch tickets to state

Park Hill’s Zach Cato and Baker Fredal pose with their medals after clinching a spot at state in the aftermath of the Class 5 District 4 Tournament at Adams Pointe Golf Club on May 8.

With the start of postseason golf, Park Hill, Park Hill South and Platte County had multiple boys clinch a berth to state.

Platte County is in a smaller class than Park Hill and Park Hill South, being in the Class 4 District 4 Tournament. The Pirates competed at Paradise Pointe Golf Course on May 8.

Platte County senior Parker Amos is the sole Pirate whose season isn’t over, clinching a spot at state for the second time in his career. Amos tied for 11th place with 80 strokes.

“We’re very proud of how the team played today,” Platte County head golf coach Trevor Short said. “We knew going into the tournament that we would have to be on our best game with the competition that we were facing. Parker Amos was able to punch his ticket to his second State Championships as well as his second All-District Honors.”

Another Pirate senior, Jackson Gabbert, was right outside of the top-20 and missed out on making it to state. He ended in a tie for 22nd place with 88 strokes, 16 above par.

“Jackson made a good run at the cutline and played well but fell just shy of the mark.  He did make his last shot of his high school career very memorable with a long 25-foot putt made for a birdie on his last hole,” Short said.

Braden Hendee finished with 92 strokes and Josh Knickman ended with 93 strokes, ending in a tie for 28th place and in 32nd place, respectively. Josh Gentilia was the final Platte County golfer to finish, doing so with 95 strokes to tie for 35th place.

“Our young players may not have had their best rounds today, but they gained some very valuable lessons that will help motivate them to push even harder as they prepare for next season. We look forward to what the future may bring with these gentlemen and the rest of our team,” Short said.

Park Hill and Park Hill South were both in the Class 5 District 4 Tournament at Adams Pointe Golf Club. The Panthers came away with a third-place finish – one stroke behind runner-up Liberty North – with 310 total strokes as Rockhurst came away with the district title.

The Trojans have two state qualifiers: Zach Cato and Baker Fredal. Cato was in a 5-way tie for fifth place with 75 strokes, three above par, and Fredal tied in 10th place with 76 strokes.

Park Hill South’s Drew Hurley was one of the four golfers to tie with Cato as he will also be headed to state. Lucas Nichols tied in 14th place with 78 strokes, one ahead of Keegan Feder.

Park Hill South closed out the day with two more in the top-25. Matthew Parker tied in 18th place with 80 strokes and Jack McNearney tied in 22nd place with 82 strokes.

For Park Hill, its last three golfers were spread in the standings. Ethan Howell took 29th place, Alejandro Cardenas earned 35th place and Gavin Schaag ended his junior campaign with a 46th place finish out of 71 total.

State golf will take place over two days on May 15 and 16. Platte County will be at Sedalia Country Club, while Park Hill and Park Hill South will be at Silo Ridge Golf and Country Club in Bolivar, MO.
