Park Hill and Park Hill South shined in the competitive Kansas City Suburban Conference Silver Division Track and Field Meet at Lee’s Summit High School on May 4.
The Park Hill and Park Hill South boys were in a tight race to close out the top-4, with the Panthers ending with 92.83 points and the Trojans ending with 93.33 points. The Park Hill and Park Hill South girls tied for third place with 97 points, narrowly trailing Lee’s Summit who took second place with 102.5 points.
The Trojans had multiple PR’s on the day especially in the field events. Kendrick Bell and Jordan Smith both did that in the long jump as Bell’s hop of 22-2 feet was good enough for a silver medal and Smith’s leap of 21-9 feet gave him a bronze medal.
Smith also came away with a medal in the javelin, throwing it 170-1 feet for second place as Jordan Rider won the event with a throw of 173 feet. Smith finished the 110-meter hurdles in 16 seconds, taking third place.
T.J. McGhee collected a silver medal in the pole vault, clearing a 13-1 foot bar for the Panthers. Smith took fourth place.
Bell was a conference champion in the high jump, having a career-best leap of 6-8 feet. Desire Tonye-Nyemeck was the runner-up and Landen Julson took fourth place.
In the 400-meter dash, Park Hill senior August Jones was the first to finish – doing so in 49.54 seconds – narrowly beating Park Hill South junior Shane Smith in 0.2 seconds. Smith was on the Panthers’ second-place 4x100-meter relay team that was less than a second ahead of the 43.28 second, third place Trojans.
Briggs Bartosh took fourth place in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, crossing the finish line in 11.17 seconds and 22.64 seconds. Smith took seventh place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.94 seconds.
Lady Trojans’ Alyssa Ball, Jamari Ervin, Allison Gonier and Cali Richards ran a season-best in the 4x200-meter relay en route to being conference champs in the event with a time of 1:47.28. Ball took second place in the open 100 and 200 with times of 12.85 seconds and 27.04 seconds, respectively.
Ervin earned third place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.3 seconds. Mackenzie Moretina was the runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.15 seconds and took fourth place in the 300-meter hurdles in 50.19 seconds.
Grace Hodge won the pole vault in 9-35 feet, followed by Lauren Smith in sixth place in 8-36 feet. Brooke Boehm won the long jump in 16-6 feet and took second place in the high jump after clearing the 5-2-foot bar.
Park Hill South freshman Madilynn Conklin took third place in the 1,600-meter run in 5:17.09 and Park Hill junior Natlie Gerdes earned fifth place in 5:41.04. In the 800-meter run, Park Hill South senior Ella Conklin crossed the finish line in 2:30.34 to earn fourth place.
Addison Bjorn won the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.1 seconds and Addison Grimm took fifth place in 1:02.46. Judy Elful won the 300-meter hurdles in 46.21 seconds and won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.68 seconds.
Isabella Patton took second place in the discus with a throw of 115-5 feet. Mia Personelli claimed third place in the shot put with a 32-1-foot throw.
Thomas Garrett collected a silver medal in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:24.81. The freshman also earned a bronze medal in the 3,200-meter run, crossing the finish line in 9:48.37.
Kiros Martin threw the discus 139.7 feet to earn a silver medal. Darrien Jones and Harold Moore finished back-to-back to close out the top-5 with tosses of 126-6 feet and 124-2 feet, respectively.
Park Hill and Park Hill South will see some familiar faces in their next meet, as the rivals are also in the same district. The postseason is finally here with the Panthers and Trojans set to compete at Staley High School in the Class 5 District 8 Track and Field Meet on May 13.
