Pirates hold their own against reigning Class 6 Runners-Up

Dayton Doll fields a ball in the first inning in the Pirates’ 3-2 loss to Blue Springs South, a matchup of the reigning Class 5 State Champions and Class 6 Runners-Up, at Platte County High School May 5.

With a chance to reach .500, the Platte County baseball team (15-18) came up shy of putting another tally in the win column in a 1-run loss to Blue Springs South (24-3) on May 5.

Blue Springs South was the runner-up in the Class 6 State Championship and had won the last 10 games before the matchup with Platte County. The Pirates put up a fight before ultimately falling short, 4-3.

The Jaguars left two runners on base in each of the first two innings, but the Pirate defense held them off the board. In the bottom of the second inning, Brennan McLaughlin doubled to left field to send Devin Wassman and Dylan Zimmerman across home plate.

That lead didn’t last too long as Blue Springs South chipped away with one run in the ensuing inning and then took a 1-run margin in the fourth inning. The Jaguars went up 3-2 on a triple in the fourth inning.

Platte County had some chances down the stretch but was unable to put another run on the board. Cameron Dean went two-for-two on the day as the Jaguars had seven hits to the Pirates four.

Platte County had three pitchers throughout the night with Ethan Veach having the most strikeouts, 3. The Pirates move to 8-5 at home this season – a downgrade from the 15-1 finish there last spring – as their following three games before the postseason are away.

This was two straight losses for Platte County which fell short against Belton (16-9) in extra innings on May 5. Platte County went up 5-0 in the first two innings before Belton eventually tied the game at 7-7 in the sixth inning.

The next three innings went scoreless and after 10 innings, Belton pulled away on a walk-off RBI single to center field with two runners on and two outs. Dayton Doll, Dylan Robertson and McLaughlin all had two hits and Dean led the team with three RBIs.

Platte County went on to lose its third straight and seven of its last eight against Raymore-Peculiar (8-18) by a score of 7-5 on May 8. The Pirates will head to North Kansas City (6-17) on May 10 and then close out the regular season at Park Hill (12-15) on May 12.
