Kansas City youth wrestling teams dominated the field at the USA Wrestling Youth State Tournament that ended on March 10.
Greater Heights Wrestling Club won the state title with 149 points. Grind House was second with 119 and Victory was third with 95. All three are Kansas City area teams, with the latter two having connections to Liberty. Greater Heights, with ties to Park Hill, won the state title for the 17th straight year.
Other teams with area ties competing at Hyvee Arena was Platte County, North Platte and Team Viper.
There were six state champions from those area teams. Five came from Greater Heights, which practices at Park Hill and Oak Park high schools.
K’lyn Curtis pinned Neosho’s Gabriel Busteed in the second period to win the 10-and-under 170 pounds. At 12U 60, Mason Brayfield won 5-2 against Spencer Cunningham of Victory. Ryder Shelton added a title at 12U 70 by beating Devon Harrison of Victory by a pin in the second period.
Rylan Kuhn pinned Matthew Burch from Fort Zumwalt in the 12U 135 title match. Carter McCallister took a title at 14U 105 by posting a 16-4 major decision against Tanner Barker of Jackson County Wrestling.
Curtis and Brayfield were 3-0, while Shelton, McCallister and Kuhn went 4-0.
Platte County Wrestling had a champion at the 8U division. Hank Marriott nipped Memphis Harmon of Lebanon, 6-4, in the 80-pound class.
