The KC Current’s plans for the world’s first stadium purpose-built for a women’s professional team continue with the official groundbreaking for the project on Thursday, Oct. 6.
The Current’s stadium will be located just south of the Missouri River, but the organization is headquartered in Riverside, with a training facility there that opened earlier this year.
Fans from across the region are invited to attend as the ownership group of Angie Long, Chris Long and Brittany Mahomes welcomes dignitaries from across the region and the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) to take part in the festivities.
The event begins at 5 p.m. with remarks from ownership, the City of Kansas City, Port KC and others in the community, followed by key contributors to the project participating in the traditional shovel ceremony. A celebration party will cap off the night.
“This is a historic and iconic night for our organization and for women’s sports across the globe,” said Kansas City Current co-owner and founder Angie Long, “So many people have come together to make this project possible, and we can’t wait to put a shovel into the ground.”
Membership deposits for the stadium went on sale on Tuesday, Sept. 13.
The first purpose-built training complex for a women’s professional sports team in the United States opened in Riverside in June. The $18 million training complex was privately-funded by team owners and located just off I-635 and Horizons Parkway.
The complex includes two grass pitches and one artificial turf with more than 17,000 square feet. The layout is focused on all aspects of player health including training (elite weight, cardio and recovery assets) and nutritional (high performance chef, locally-sourced menus).
In addition, the design is also focused on fostering player community and promoting physical and mental wellness.
The complex also includes nearby trails and an outdoor roof deck with views of downtown Kansas City.
