KC sewer failure closes Lake Waukomis

UPDATE - As of Tuesday, Oct. 3, the lake was open to some boating activity but remains closed for swimming and other activities due to contaminants.

The lake at Lake Waukomis is closed to all activities due to a Kansas City sewer system leak.

On Thursday, Sept. 28 the Lake Waukomis Homeowners Association was notified of a sewer pump failure and that it was possible the lake could be contaminated. The lake was closed to swimming, boating and all other recreational activity pending testing. According to a notice posted Saturday by the homeowners association, Kansas City staff were testing the water for contaminants.

According to an update posted Monday, Oct. 2 by the Platte County Sheriff’s Office, very high levels of contaminants had been found in the water and the lake will remain closed until further notice.
