KCI boys basketball roundup: North Platte beats Maysville in overtime

North Platte got back in the win column with an 48-40 overtime win against Maysville on Monday, Jan. 6 in Dearborn.

The Panthers held a comfortable lead going into the final quarter, 35-17, but they were held without a basket in the fourth quarter.

The Wolverines scored 20 points in the final 8 minutes, getting nine points from Logan Kimbrell and six more from Blayne Kolb. Maysville tied the game at 37, but in OT, the scoring for Wolverines went away and North Platte surged ahead

Andrew Hernandez scored four of his team-high 11 points in the extra session, while Cameron Leupold scored four of his eight points.

North Platte struggled at the free-throw line, hitting only 13 of 30 attempts. 

Mid-Buchanan boys 41, West Platte 38

The first part of the season for the Bluejays ended with a tough loss on Friday, Dec. 20 in Faucett, Mo.

The Dragons rallied in the second half to pick up the KCI Conference win. West Platte (4-4, 0-1) led 8-4 after the first quarter and then 22-17 at halftime.

Mid-Buchanan limited West Platte to only two baskets in the third quarter, but the Bluejays led 26-24 going into the fourth quarter.

West Platte got only one basket in the fourth quarter, from Mason Montez, but hit 10 of 13 free throws. Phillip Pattison hit seven of eight attempts for West Platte and finished with 19 points. Xavier Reynolds scored eight points, all in the second half, to finish second in scoring for West Platte.

Mid-Buchanan got seven points from Christian Scaggs in the fourth, while three other players had at least two points in the rally.

Scaggs had 14 points, while Stetson Lieffring added 13 for the Dragons.

Penney 60, North Platte 55

The Hornets won for an eighth straight time against the Panthers in a showdown on Friday, Dec. 20 in Dearborn.

The teams were closely matched in the first half, with Penney leading 31-29 at halftime. The difference came in the third quarter, when the Hornets outscored the Panthers by seven to pull to take a nine-point lead into the final quarter.

North Platte rallied in the fourth behind seven points from Jace Stubbs but came up short.

Stubbs had 11 points, while Andrew Hernandez and Caine Huffman each had 13 points to lead North Platte in scoring.

Ryan Cook scored 26 points for Penney.

North Platte: The Panthers host North Andrew on Jan. 8 before going back to KCI play on Jan. 10 at Plattsburg.

West Platte: The Bluejays have been idle since a Dec. 20 loss against Mid-Buchanan. Ryan Nichols’ squad has three games this week, which started with a home game against Northland Christian on Tuesday, Jan. 7. Results were not available by press time. On Thursday, West Platte hosts South Holt at 7:30 p.m. in the second game of a doubleheader, while traveling to Lawson on Friday, Jan. 10 in a KCI Conference game.


Lawson Tournament: Both North Platte and West Platte will play in the Lawson Invitational, which starts on Monday, Jan. 13. North Platte is the No. 8 seed and plays No. 1 Richmond at 8:15 p.m. on Jan. 13. The next game in that part of the bracket is Lawson vs. Carrollton. The winners will play in the semifinals at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, while the losers play in the consolation bracket on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 5:45 p.m. West Platte is the No. 3 seed and will play Trenton at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14. The winner moves on to face the winner of Gallatin/Penney at 8:15 p.m. in the semifinals on Thursday, Jan. 16, while the losers will battle at 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 15.
