FAUCETT – Since 2018, the West Platte volleyball team (13-5-1) has taken down Mid-Buchanan (10-13-1) 10 out of the last 11 meetings including a road sweep on Sept. 28.
West Platte moved to 3-1 in the KCI Conference with a 3-0 victory over Mid-Buchanan. The Lady Blue Jays won sets one and three 25-17 and dominated set two with a 25-6 win.
Arianna Nower erupted for 20 kills – more than the rest of her team which combined for 18 others – along with three digs and nine receptions. Maddia McMillan had 32 assists and Avery Holmes had 19 digs.
That was a big bounce-back performance by West Platte which was coming off a 4-set loss to the No. 3 ranked team in Class 1 on Sept. 26. St. Joseph Christian (15-1) was riding a 13-game winning streak ahead of the matchup.
West Platte lost the opening set 25-16 but tied the match with a 25-20 win. The Lady Blue Jays kept the next two sets close, but fell by scores of 25-20 and 25-23.
Nower led the team with 16 kills, while Holmes led the way in digs with 25. Klaira Groom had 12 kills and Blair McHenry had four blocks.
McMillan was her usual self on distributing the ball, dishing out 29 assists. The senior surpassed 1,000 career assists in the win over Lathrop (13-11-2) on Sept. 25 and also reached 500 career digs against East Buchanan (20-2) on Sept. 18.
Before its last two matches, West Platte was the runner-up in the 22nd Annual Midway Tournament on Sept. 23. The Lady Blue Jays’ only loss was to Adrian (18-0-1) – which is No. 3 in Class 2 – in the championship in a 2-0 loss.
