Lady Pirates close out regular season, earn top-3 seed in districts

Platte County’s Lauren Stone has helped Lady Pirates turn season around after 0-5 start.

The Platte County girls’ soccer team (10-10) lost its first five games of the year – being shut out in the opening four – but has closed the regular season out strong and clinched a top-3 seed in districts.

Platte County will be the No. 3 seed in the Class 4 District 8 Tournament at Smithville High School. The Lady Pirates have won three of their last four games, most recently taking down Belton (5-10) 1-0 on May 4.

In a conference matchup with William Chrisman on May 2, the first half was scoreless. Sloan Kassen scored a pair of goals in the second half – with Annabel Beeman finding the back of the net in the 77th minute – to lead Platte County to a 3-0 win.

Ahead of the 2-game winning streak, Platte County lost 2-1 to Pembroke Hill (8-11-1) on May 1. The Lady Pirates had two 8-0, mercy-rule victories this year and both were against Raytown (4-11).

After doing so back on April 4 for their second win of the spring, the Lady Pirates did it again on the road on April 27. Five Platte County players scored on the day, led by Kassen, Lily Kytasaari and Rylee Burris who all had two goals.

Lauren Stone struck first in the fourth minute and Platte County went into halftime with a 5-0 lead. Finley Kaser, the Lady Pirates’ sophomore goalkeeper, didn’t allow a single goal as Raytown didn’t have a shot on goal.

Platte County’s final game of the regular season came against Grain Valley (15-4) on May 9. The Lady Pirates will start the postseason with a first-round matchup against Kansas City’s East (5-9) on May 13.
